I've been looking into this further - and it seems the problem is more 
deep seated than I thought :-(

At the moment therefore I would recommend that your students 
switch to using a UK/US locale settings whilst using ASCE. This will 
ensure correct datatype storage.

We will fix this bug in the forthcoming release due at the end of 
August.
